Watercolor of Butterfly on Leaf Sprig
England, 1819

Watercolor on paper. Brown with blue highlights in the forewings offer simplicity to this butterfly which are followed with the hindwings that have wonderful detail with hundreds of light blue dots on an inky blue background. Notice the red areas with white dots and the draped effect on the lower section. It is framed in a period lemon gold frame. The initials in the lower right hand corner, "E.K." stand for Mrs. E. Kerie. This is a nice large size. There is some toning in the upper third of the background paper. This discoloration was caused by something laying underneath for many years. Otherwise, it is in excellent condition.  12 3/4" wide x 14 1/4" high (framed) 8 3/8" wide x 10 1/4" high (sight)

There is a slight shadowing in the painting which gives it a three dimensional quality. It is framed in a period lemon gold frame and the 19th century hand blown glass has a 1/2" narrow seed beside a bubble in the upper right hand corner. This was painted in 1846 by one of two sisters, Miss Mary Jackson or Miss Hannah Jackson in Tamworth, England.
